This page is a compilation of resources for my students organized by class.  I will continue to expand this page as time goes by.

Image Transfer Techniques

Please verify the usage rights of images prior to use.  The majority of on-line resources below are copyright free for personal use.  Some image banks have limited commercial use rules and some have individual permissions granted for specific images.  If you want to purchase full commercial use of an image, please contact the institution/archive/company hosting the image.

Free Image Sources

The Graphics Fairy - a blog dedicated to vintage images.  This collection is fully searchable and the hostess uploads 1-2 images per day.

Dover Publications - subscribe to their newsletter and receive a collection of free images each week.  The company compiles a selection of their books on a specific theme and provides 3-4 digital samples from each book.

Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Online Catalogue - this is a HUGE collection of photographs and print materials searchable by topic. Each image has a full pedigree of information, including photographer, date, and usage rights.  In most cases, there are at least two sizes to download. If the image is strictly protected from any use, only a small thumbnail will be available.

The Vintage Moth - similar to The Graphics Fairy, although the search function is limited to the labels used in the right-hand sidebar.

Vintage Scans - a male perspective on mid century (20th) advertising media. Various topics including lots of cheesecake (not the dessert kind) and a wide range of dpi quality.
and the companion blog:

Greenpaper - similar to Graphics Fairy although much smaller collection and not copyright free for commercial use.

Other options:
Garage/estate sales, antique stores, Ebay, ArtFire, flea markets, or just put the word out to all your friends that you are looking for  fill in the blank style imagery. You will be amazed to see how quickly the donations come to you.

For Purchase

Dreamstime Photography - this is a pay site with a flexible scale of usage rights and costs.  I had a need for two specific images and was able to purchase a full commercial license for up to 10,000 prints for a reasonable amount.

Etsy - this is an excellent site to search for specific eras of vintage images. I have made several "lot" purchases from vendors here when I had a specific composition and era in mind.  Fully searchable by category, such as "1970's wedding photo".

Gauche Alchemy - an ArtFire site (similar to Etsy) where you can purchase the punchinella and lace sample kits I provided in class.

For more information about their projects, here is their blog:

istencils - an online shop with 100's of stencils of images and patterns.  Each design is available in multiple sizes.  This is where I purchased the small 5 x 5" pattern/texture stencils.

Citrasolv - these folks have an active artist page on their site, complete with contests, galleries, how to instructions and videos, and links to artists' web sites.

Inkjet Transfers Yahoo Group - must join to access, however this is a fully searchable Yahoo group full of discussions and how-to instructions going back several years.
